On the afternoon of September 27, the Women’s Team Epee competition of the Asian Games took place at the gymnasium of Hangzhou Dianzi University. Tang Junyao, a talented fencer from the School of Economics and Management at Hefei University, won the bronze medal in the event. This represents yet another notable achievement for the HFU students, following their impressive triumph in August when they secured the gold medal in the Women’s Epee and the silver medal in the Men’s Epee at the FISU World University Games held in Chengdu.
Moving forward, the Martial Arts Routine Championship of Chinese College Students 2023, organized by the Federation of University Sports of China and executed by its branch of Traditional Ethnic Sports, was held in Tianjin from October 5th to 11th. Among the five students sent by HFU to attend the championship, Xu Jiahao won second place nationally in the Men’s Class A Tongbei Quan event, and Sun Chen won third place in Men’s Class A Hung Kuen. Xu Jiahao, Sun Chen, and Liu Chenyang received fourth place in the Class A Paired Practice.
This Championship, representing the highest level of martial arts competition among national universities, attracted 804 athletes from 184 teams across the country to participate in this year’s event.
On October 14th, the first Dragon Boat League for College Students in Hefei was held at Shaoquan Lake in Hefei National High-tech Industry Development Zone. As a team playing the game for the first time, the athletes from Hefei University displayed perseverance and indomitability, which led to an outstanding second prize.
Dragon boat teams from 16 colleges and universities, with over 400 participants, competed fiercely, showcasing a thrilling “Fast & Furious” spectacle on the water. “Dragon boating places great emphasis on teamwork. It reminds us, as team members, of the significance of collaboration, collective efforts, tenacity, and never giving up easily if we want to achieve ultimate victory,” said Yin Bingqing, a member of the HFU dragon boat team. The other team members also expressed, participating in the dragon boat league allows them to experience the charm of traditional Chinese culture, enhance their sense of identity and pride in the ethnic culture, and boost their cultural confidence.
The Department of Physical Education and Arts strictly implements the national requirements for bringing traditional Chinese sports activities into campuses, enhances students’ awareness of ethnic traditional sports, and promotes curriculum reform in physical education. Building upon the existing martial arts routines and Sanda courses, the Department has introduced additional courses such as weapons-based martial arts, dragon and lion dances, and dragon boating as part of the curriculum for ethnic traditional sports. They also provide guidance to students participating in martial arts clubs and university teams for their daily training, aiming to integrate in-class and out-of-class activities.
